Open an XRechnung and save it as PDF
You received an invoice as an .xml file and only see code when you open it? That is an XRechnung, the German e-invoice format. It holds all invoice details, but only software can read it. Here is how to turn it into a readable invoice.
Why does the XRechnung look like code?
An XRechnung is a pure data file (XML), built so accounting software can read it automatically. There is no picture of the invoice in it, so a browser or text editor only shows nested values like <ram:GrandTotalAmount>.
Open an XRechnung in three steps
- Open the XRechnung viewer.
- Drop in the XML file (or a ZUGFeRD PDF).
- The invoice appears as usual: sender, all line items, taxes, amount, bank details. Use “Print” to save it as PDF.
The file is not uploaded; everything runs in your browser.
What do I archive: XML or PDF?
With an e-invoice the XML file is the actual invoice. Keep it in its original form. The PDF is only a view for reading or forwarding. Ask your tax adviser about retention in your specific case.
What if the invoice comes as a ZUGFeRD PDF?
A ZUGFeRD invoice is a normal PDF with embedded invoice data, so you can read it directly. Before paying, check that the bank details in the data match the PDF: check invoice.
