How to open an XRechnung

An XRechnung is a pure XML file. Double-click it and you only see code. Drop the file into the box above: Gegenstempel shows it as a normal invoice – sender, recipient, every line item, VAT and bank details. It also works with ZUGFeRD and Factur-X PDFs, which carry the invoice data embedded in the PDF.

  • Both XRechnung syntaxes: UBL and CII (UN/CEFACT), XRechnung 2.x and later, ZUGFeRD 2.0.1 and later.
  • Save as PDF: for filing, bookkeeping or your tax adviser.
  • Pay directly: scan the GiroCode with your banking app. IBAN, amount and reference are filled in.
  • Attachments: delivery notes or timesheets inside the XRechnung download with one click.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. The viewer runs in your browser, on desktop and mobile. The file is not uploaded.

Why did I receive an XML file at all?

Since 2025 every business in Germany must be able to receive e-invoices. Many suppliers therefore send an XRechnung (XML) instead of a PDF. Legally the XML file is the invoice – so keep it.

Is the displayed invoice legally valid?

The XML file itself is what counts legally. The view and the saved PDF are a readable rendering of it, handy for filing and checking. Archive the original file as well.

Can I check whether the bank details are right?

Yes. Save your suppliers’ IBANs: on the next invoice you see at once if one is new. For ZUGFeRD PDFs the invoice check also compares the visible invoice with the invoice data.

A validator reports BR-DE-15, BR-CO-10 or similar. What does it mean?

These are codes from the official XRechnung and EN 16931 validation rules. We explain the most common ones with cause, example and fix: XRechnung error codes explained.
